Rising Pneumonia Concerns in Mumbai: A Call for Stronger Urban Health Measures

Mumbai, 12th November, 2025: On World Pneumonia Day 2025, observed annually on November 12, health experts have urged for renewed focus on pneumonia prevention and treatment. Despite being both preventable and treatable, pneumonia continues to claim millions of lives globally, particularly among children under five and the elderly.

This year’s theme underscores the importance of vaccination, hygiene, and timely medical care in saving lives. Globally, pneumonia remains the leading infectious cause of death in children under five, accounting for around 14% of all child deaths. In India, the situation remains alarming — according to UNICEF and NFHS-5 data, pneumonia causes nearly one in six child deaths, with the country contributing to approximately 23% of global pneumonia fatalities in this age group.

Dr. Parthiv Shah, Consultant Chest Physician at Apex Group of Hospitals, emphasized the critical role of early detection and prevention:

“Pneumonia is often mistaken for common respiratory infections in its early stages. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are key to saving lives. Vaccination, balanced nutrition, and good hygiene practices — especially regular handwashing — are simple yet powerful preventive measures. Parents must ensure their children receive pneumococcal and influenza vaccines as recommended.”

Dr. Shah also cautioned that pneumonia is not limited to childhood, adding:

“Adults with chronic lung or heart diseases, diabetes, or weakened immunity are particularly vulnerable. Anyone experiencing persistent cough, fever, or shortness of breath should seek medical advice without delay.”

Apex Group of Hospitals continues to lead community health initiatives through respiratory awareness drives, vaccination programs, and preventive education. On this World Pneumonia Day, citizens are urged to stay alert, get vaccinated, and seek prompt care — because every breath truly matters.

Pneumonia is a serious respiratory infection that inflames the lungs’ air sacs (alveoli), often causing them to fill with fluid or pus. It can result from bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, presenting symptoms like persistent cough, fever, chills, chest pain, and shortness of breath. While most healthy individuals recover with proper treatment, the illness can be life-threatening for infants, older adults, and those with chronic conditions.

In urban centers like Mumbai, pneumonia cases tend to rise due to a mix of environmental, social, and healthcare challenges — from high pollution levels and dense populations to limited ventilation in crowded areas.

For over 25 years, Apex Group of Hospitals has been a trusted name in Mumbai’s healthcare landscape, offering advanced medical facilities and expert care across Borivali, Kandivali, and Mulund.
