New Delhi, Sep 30: Apple has entered India’s digital payments space with the launch of Apple Pay, adding its payment service to a market where mobile-based transactions have become an everyday part of consumer life.

The entry comes as India’s digital payments ecosystem continues to expand, led by the rapid adoption of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). From large retailers and restaurants to neighbourhood shops and small businesses, consumers across the country increasingly rely on digital methods to make payments.

Apple Pay allows users with supported Apple devices to add eligible debit and credit cards to the Apple Wallet and use them for payments at participating merchants, apps and websites. The service uses device-based authentication and security features designed to protect users’ payment information.

Apple Pay’s arrival gives consumers another option alongside the payment methods already widely used in India. The country’s payment environment is distinctive because UPI has made QR-based transactions simple and accessible, while cards and other digital payment services continue to serve different consumer needs.

For Apple users, the service brings payments more closely into the company’s device ecosystem. Users can access supported cards through Apple Wallet and authenticate transactions using features such as Face ID, Touch ID or a device passcode, depending on the device.

The launch also comes at a time when Indian consumers are increasingly comfortable with cashless transactions. The widespread use of smartphones and digital payment applications has changed how people pay for everyday purchases, from groceries and food to travel and online shopping.

For merchants, the growing range of digital payment options can provide additional ways to accept electronic transactions and serve customers with different payment preferences.

Apple’s entry also highlights the attractiveness of India’s large and rapidly evolving digital consumer market. While UPI remains a major part of the country's payment ecosystem, the arrival of another global payment service adds to the range of choices available to consumers.

The development reflects the broader transformation of India's payments landscape, where convenience, security and seamless mobile experiences are increasingly shaping how people transact.

With Apple Pay now entering the market, Indian consumers have another digital payment option as the country continues its transition towards a more connected and cash-light economy.
