New Delhi, Dec 29: The Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), yesterday attended the State-Level Namsoong Festival at Lingee, Nalipartam, under the Tumin–Lingee Constituency. Namsoong is the traditional New Year and harvest festival of the Lepcha community, one of the oldest indigenous communities of Sikkim.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister explained that Namsoong symbolises both the beginning of a new agricultural year and the deep spiritual relationship between the Lepcha people and Mayel Lyang, a term referring to Sikkim as the sacred ancestral homeland of the Lepchas, often described as the “Hidden Paradise.”

Shri Tamang highlighted that the Lepcha way of life, rooted in harmony with nature, humility, and peaceful coexistence, offers valuable lessons in an era of environmental and social challenges. He further referred to the civilizational concept of Lho-Men-Tsong-Sum, which represents the historical unity of the Lepcha, Bhutia, and Nepali communities—three cultural groups that together shaped the social and cultural foundation of Sikkim.

The Chief Minister underscored that Sikkim’s history is distinguished by harmony and mutual respect among communities rather than conquest, and acknowledged the Lepcha community’s wisdom, resilience, and cultural contributions as forming a strong moral foundation of the state.

Reaffirming the state government’s commitment, Shri Tamang stated that sustained efforts are being made to preserve and promote the Lepcha language, culture, and heritage through policy support, cultural programmes, and educational initiatives.

Extending warm greetings on the occasion, the Chief Minister wished that Namsoong brings peace, prosperity, and happiness to every household. He also invoked the blessings of Mount Kangchenjunga, the highest peak in India and a sacred symbol for the people of Sikkim, expressing hope that the state continues to remain united, peaceful, and progressive.

The celebration featured traditional rituals and cultural performances, showcasing the rich living traditions of the Lepcha community.
